Juvederm Ultra XC is an injectable hyaluronic acid filler from Allergan, and probably the most recognized lip product in the Juvederm range. The box holds two prefilled 1.0 mL syringes and four single-use 30G ½″ needles, which gives a clinic a complete treatment with product left over for a follow-up or a second area.

Inside the syringe is cross-linked hyaluronic acid at 24 mg/mL, made through bacterial fermentation rather than sourced from animal tissue. Allergan’s Hylacross process gives the gel a soft, even consistency that spreads smoothly through the mid-to-deep dermis. Compared with its sibling, Ultra Plus XC, this is the lighter of the two gels. Less cross-linking makes it more fluid, which is exactly what lips and moderate creases call for. A stiff gel in a lip looks like a stiff gel in a lip; this one flexes with every word and smile.

The XC stands for the 0.3% lidocaine mixed into the formula, there to keep the appointment comfortable. In the US, the product carries FDA approval for correcting moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and for lip and perioral augmentation in adults over 21. Results commonly hold nine to twelve months before a touch-up makes sense.

Who Is It Recommended For?

• Adults over 21 with moderate to severe lines, especially nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and the small creases that gather around the mouth.
• Anyone whose lips have thinned with age, or who never had much lip volume to begin with and wants a believable amount added.
• Patients correcting asymmetry: one side fuller than the other, an uneven border, a top lip that disappears when smiling.
• First-time filler patients. The softer gel produces a forgiving, natural result, which makes it a common starting point before trying denser products.
• People put off by injection discomfort, since the built-in lidocaine dulls the area within seconds.

It should not be used on anyone allergic to lidocaine or with a history of severe allergic reactions, and it is available to licensed medical professionals only.

Composition

The formula is short:

• Cross-linked hyaluronic acid (24 mg/mL), the same water-binding molecule found naturally in skin
• Lidocaine (0.3%), a fast-acting local anesthetic
• Phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.2), a sterile carrier matched to the body’s own chemistry
