About Synvisc Hylan G-F 20
Synvisc was approved by the FDA in 1997 for treating knee osteoarthritis. Introduced as a form of Visco-supplementation therapy, it supplemented or replaced the knee joint’s natural synovial fluid. This helped alleviate the swelling and pain associated with osteoarthritis. Synvisc received widespread praise and became popular in the prescription drugs industry, leading to its expansion into its own product line. Under Sanofi’s ownership, its current manufacturer, the Synvisc line, continued to evolve, offering medical experts versions that provide longer-lasting relief.
How It Works?
Synvisc is composed of hyaluronan, a naturally occurring substance present in the synovial fluid. This fluid helps lubricate the knee joints by creating a cushion between the knee joint’s bones.
The injection lessens discomfort and increases joint mobility. Additionally, Synvisc helps the body produce new hyaluronan and momentarily restores the knee joint’s natural lubrication.
Key Features
- Viscoelasticity: Synvisc mimics the joint’s natural synovial fluid, providing shock absorption and lubrication to protect cartilage, reduce pain, and improve joint movement.
- Hyaluronic Acid: The cross-linked HA in Synvisc Hylan is chemically modified to make it last longer in the joints.
- Pain Relief: Synvisc Hylan slows the progression of joint degeneration by reducing friction.
Results
- Immediate: Right after the injection, the lubricating effect will provide swift pain relief. Stiffness and swelling will go down, improving movement.
- After 1 to 2 Weeks: Stiffness, swelling and pain improve significantly.
- After 4 to 6 Weeks: Thanks to increased lubrication, joint flexibility improves, and patients are able to move with much less discomfort.
Composition
- Hylan G-F 20 (Cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid): Occurs naturally in the body and acts as the shock absorber and lubricant within the joints.
- Cross-Linking HA: Provides HA with a longer-lasting effect.
- Sodium Chloride: Balance the solution’s osmolarity to match the body’s fluid levels.
- Phosphate Buffer (Phosphate, Sodium Phosphate): Maintain the pH balance and stability of the injection.
