Juvederm Ultra Plus XC (2 x 1.0 ML)

Laugh lines earn their name honestly. Years of smiles, squints, and long conversations slowly press creases into the skin, and at some point those creases stop fading when your face relaxes. Creams sit too close to the surface to reach them. A deep fold has to be treated at depth, and that’s the thinking behind Juvederm Ultra Plus XC: a smooth hyaluronic acid gel, placed beneath the crease by a trained injector, that props the skin back up from below and keeps it there for the better part of a year.

About Juvederm Ultra Plus XC (2 x 1.0 mL)

Juvederm Ultra Plus XC is an injectable dermal filler from Allergan, the company behind the wider Juvederm range as well as Botox. Each pack contains two prefilled 1.0 mL syringes and four sterile 27G ½″ needles, so a clinic gets a full treatment plus product in reserve for a second area or a touch-up.

The gel is cross-linked hyaluronic acid at a concentration of 24 mg/mL, produced by bacterial fermentation, which means nothing in it comes from animal tissue. Allergan makes it with its Hylacross process, turning the raw material into an even, malleable gel rather than a grainy suspension. Within the Ultra family, the Plus version carries a firmer degree of cross-linking. That extra structure lets it hold its shape inside deep folds, the kind that press lighter fillers flat within a few months.

The XC on the label refers to the 0.3% lidocaine blended through the gel, a small addition that makes the appointment far easier to sit through. In the US, it holds FDA approval for injection into the mid-to-deep dermis to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and for lip and perioral enhancement in adults aged 21 and over. Most patients keep their results for nine to twelve months.

Who Is It Recommended For?

This filler suits a fairly specific group:

  • Adults 21 and older with moderate to severe folds, particularly nasolabial folds (the lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines, and deep creases around the chin.
  • Patients whose lines proved too deep for a lighter filler. If a previous treatment flattened out within three or four months, the firmer Ultra Plus gel is the usual next step.
  • Anyone wanting fuller lips or a cleaner lip border, with a result that still moves naturally in conversation.
  • People who dread needles. The lidocaine inside the gel starts numbing the area seconds after the first pass.

It is not suitable for anyone with a lidocaine allergy or a history of severe allergic reactions, and it is sold for use by licensed medical professionals only.

Composition

Three components do all the work here:

  • Cross-linked hyaluronic acid (24 mg/mL), a sugar molecule the body already produces, stabilized so it lasts months rather than days
  • Lidocaine (0.3%), a local anesthetic mixed evenly through the gel
  • Phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.2), the sterile carrier that keeps the gel matched to the skin’s natural pH

How It Benefits the Skin

  • Deep folds fill out immediately. The change is visible before the patient leaves the chair, and the final result settles in over the following two weeks.
  • Hyaluronic acid binds many times its own weight in water, so the treated area stays hydrated and keeps a soft, plump texture rather than a stiff one.
  • The smooth gel spreads evenly under the skin. Expressions stay natural, with no lumps or hard edges when the face moves.
  • It restores volume where the deeper layers of skin have thinned with age, which softens the shadowing that makes folds look harsher than they are.
  • The body breaks the gel down gradually over nine to twelve months, so there is no permanent change and nothing surgical to commit to.
  • Downtime is minor. Most patients return to their day with nothing more than slight redness or swelling at the injection points.
